VMware: vNetwork Standard Switches


a virtual network switch is:

  • implemented in software
  • implemented in the VMkernel
  • provides networking connectivity for virtual machines that run on an ESXi host

a virtual switch provides connections for virutal machines to communicate with one another, whether they run on the same host or on a different host. A virtual switch allows connections for the management and migration networks as well as connections to access IP storage.

a virtual switch allows the following connection types:

  • virtual machine port groups - for connecting virtual machines to the physical network
  • for connecting VMkernel services to the physical network. VMkernel services include:
    • IP storage
    • vMotion migration
    • VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance
    • ESXi managment network
